Outfit of the Week - 1 June 2015
Grainline Studio's Archer shirt is really popular pattern: 98 reviews and counting on PatternReview.com! It is popular for a reason: of those who filled out the rating section of PatternReview.com's form, 98% gave the pattern a positive rating! Archer is a loosely-fitted button-up shirt with a yoke and pockets. It is an intermediate-level pattern. However, if you're an advanced beginner wanting to learn new skills, I would definitely encourage you to try this pattern. Grainline Studio has a very detailed sew along on their website, which guides you step-by-step through the process of making this shirt. You'll learn how to sew cuffs, shirt collars, button bands and more!
Tilly and the Buttons' Arielle skirt is a lovely pencil skirt with a button opening to one side. Long darts and a high waistline create a flattering, figure-hugging shape. You have the choice of two lengths: mini and knee-length. There is also an optional lining. As always with Tilly's patterns, there are comprehensive, photo-heavy instructions to guide you through each step. As for the difficulty of this pattern, the unlined version is perfect for confident beginners. This is a relatively new pattern (released in April), so there aren't many reviews yet; of those I've seen, though, they have been very positive!
We've got a number of lovely shirtings which will work well for the Archer shirt, including our nice-quality Madeleine poplins and our luxurious made-in-England Spencer shirtings.
As for the Arielle skirt, I've recommended a few of our stretch denims and sateens.
As you can see in the collage above, I've recommended white shirting fabrics with coloured/printed denims and sateens. Other colour/fabric combinations that you might want to try include:
- light blue shirting with a black sateen or navy denim skirt
- black shirting with a black or leopard-print sateen skirt
Prices for fabrics are per quarter metre (0.25 m).
